 2016 Preview 


       Cleburne County completed the 2015 season with a 9-3 record. Last year Cleburne County captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 4A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Cleburne County reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Fayette County by a score of 40-23.

       Since 2010, Cleburne County has gone a combined 45-25. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 5A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Cleburne County has gone a combined 197-97. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 5A and 43rd in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.

       The Tigers are led by head coach Michael Shortt who is entering his nineteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 139-70 over the past eighteen seasons at Cleburne County. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of fourteen times. They have won seven region crowns with Coach Shortt.

       Coach Shortt's overall record as a head football coach in eighteen season stands at 139-70 (66.5%). His 139 wins rank 31st among active coaches in the AHSAA.

       The Cleburne County Tigers will play in Class 5A region four during the 2016 season. The Tigers move up in classification to Class 5A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 83-37 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 5A and 1st in the AHSAA.

       The Tigers enter the 2016 season having won 15 straight region games.

       The Tigers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

       The Tigers open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Leeds on Friday, August 26 at L.E. Bell Field. Last year the Leeds Green Wave finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in first place in Class 4A region three. The Green Wave won the Class 4A State Championship last season when they defeated Fayette County by a score of 55-7 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn.

       Cleburne County and Leeds have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 3-3-0 record against the Green Wave. They last met in 2001 with Cleburne County winning by a score of 16-13.
